Sweet Revenge

Glendora, CA (Women’s Soccer) – When the Lady Owls and Vaqueros of Glendale College met up for the first time this season, Citrus was mired in a slump dealing with season ending injuries and trying to still figure out who they were as a team as they played Glendale to a 3-3 tie. Since then however the Lady Owls have found a groove, and they showed that this afternoon as they beat the Vaqueros at home 2-1. The win is the tenth of the season for Citrus the first ten win season in Citrus soccer history.
Freshman Sydney Turrabiartes' gosl in the 62nd minute was the go ahead goal in their 3-1 win over Glendale Colleeg Friday afternoon. The Lady Owls started the game on their heals for much of the 1st half as they were out-shot by a margin of 14 to 8 by the Vaqueros. In fact it was Glendale who would strike first in the match when in the 23rd minute they struck pay dirt. After drawing a foul within a couple of feet of the goalies box, the Vaquero’s Jessenia Vasquez lined up a free kick from 20-yards out. Her shot went right by the Citrus line of defense and in between the legs of goalie Kimberly Breazeal, to give Glendale a 1-0 lead.

Minutes later however, the Lady Owls struck right back when in the 26th minute Trisha Eyer received a beautiful cross from Mari Montalvo. After settling the ball Eyer sent a rocket past the Glendale goalie and into the net to tie the game up at one all.

In the second half, both teams took turn controlling the play on the pitch. Citrus was able to finally pull ahead however when midfielder Sydney Turrabiartes took control of the ball at about the 25-yard line deep into Vaquero territory. Turrabiartes sent a laser that struck gold in the bottom right hand corner of the net giving the Lady Owls a 2-1 lead in the 62nd minute.

Over the final 30 minutes of the game, the Lady Owls found themselves back on their heals as the Vaqueros took seven of the final eight shots in the game. Citrus was bolstered by the play of goalie Kimberly Breazeal who recorded eight saves on the day including three in the second half. Despite the offensive onslaught of the Vaqueros the Lady Owls held strong and picked up their fourth straight win.

With the win the Lady Owls improve to 10-3-3 overall and 5-3-3 in WSC play. The Lady Owls will be back on the road to take on LA Pierce on Tuesday October 23rd. This will be the second meeting between these two squads with Pierce coming out on top 3-0 in the first match. Game time is set for 4:00 PM.
