Glendora, CA (Women’s Soccer) – When Citrus College Women’s Soccer Head Coach Tim Tracey sat down to talk about the outlook of his 2007 squad, one of the things Tracey was most excited about was the potential ability of his team to be able to control the pace of the game, and having their opponents play Citrus’ game. If tonight’s season opener against Mt. San Jacinto was any indication of things to come, then Tracey may be one very happy man at the end of the season.
The Lady Owls got things going early when last year’s leading scorer, Kelli Johnston scored her first goal of the season 11 minutes into the contest. Johnston would get in the action again later on as she recorded an assist on a Kourtney Mount goal in the 31st minute. That wouldn’t be all for Citrus in the first half however, as the Lady Owls scored less than two minutes later off the foot of Suzy Ruckel, giving them a 3-0 advantage going into halftime.
In the second half, the Lady Owls continued to pressure the Eagles defense recording seven shots on goal, compared to Mt. San Jacinto’s four. The Lady Owls were never able to cash in on any of their opportunities in the second half, but aggressive defense and stellar goal tending from Brittany Sojka, who had 11 saves, helped pave the way to a 3-0 victory for Citrus College.
With the win the Lady Owls improve to 1-0 in the young season. Citrus continues their season later this weekend as they head off to the always tough Oxnard Tournament.
