Glendora, CA (Women’s Basketball) -- The Citrus College Women’s Basketball team put together their best performance of the conference season on Wednesday night when they played host to Santa Monica College. It was all about the sharing game for the Owls as they recorded a season high 21 assists and had four players record at least three individual assists in a commanding 72-46 win over the Corsairs.
Santa Monica would keep the game close for the first 10 minutes of the contest. The Corsairs scored the first points of the game and had the lead twice in that first stretch. That all changed around the 13 minute mark in the first half when the Owls kick started a 16-0 run when Yvonne Sanchez drilled a 10 footer. Five minutes later a pair of free-throws from sophomore Brianna Barfield made the score 21-8, and Citrus had their largest lead of the night at 13 points.
The Owls continued to apply pressure to the Corsairs pushing their lead to as large as 20 points with just a little over two minutes to go when freshman Sarah Rebibo drilled a trey from the wing. Santa Monica though would score seven of the final eight points of the half to cut the lead to 14 at 36-22 at the break.
In the second half, Citrus came out of the gate strong. The Owls scored 20 of the first 26 points in the and went up by 31 points after Barfield hit another pair of free-throws. From that point forward Santa Monica never really threatened as the Owls’ lead never dipped below 23 points on their way to their biggest conference win of the season by 26.
In the win, Citrus was led by Barfield’s game high 14 points. Sophomore Julia Tani added 13, and sophomore Jasmine Cox poured in 12 off the bench. Cox also pulled in a team high nine boards, while freshmen Kenya Thomas and Sarah Rebibo both had a game high five assists each.
With the win, Citrus improves to 3-18 overall and 4-3 in WSC South play. Wednesday’s game also marks the close of the first half of conference play. At the half way point it’s still anyone’s conference to win as three times sit in first place at 4-2 and another two sit just a game back at 3-3. The Owls will likely control their own destiny down the stretch as they look for their first playoff berth in three years. The second half of conference play starts on Saturday when Citrus hosts Glendale College at 5:00 PM.
