    Avant and Brown Move on to SoCal Finals

    Mission Viejo, CA (Track and Field) -- A week after PR’ing at the WSC Finals, the tandem of Brooke Brown and Maya Avant became the last two people standing for the Citrus College Track and Field team this past weekend at the Southern California Preliminaries. Both Avant and Brown advanced to next weekend’s SoCal Finals in the triple jump and javelin respectively.

    Brown took 10th in the javelin with a throw of 99 feet 8 inches, while Avant took 12th with a jump of 33 feet 4.75 inches. Other results on the women’s side included a personal record from Cassandra Zolozabal in the Hammer, with a throw of 111 feet and 7 inches. The throw placed her 21st in the competition.

    Vanessa Esquivel and Shawn Miller also posted strong marks on Friday and Saturday. Miller took 21st in the 100M Dash with a time of 12.85 seconds, while Esquivel was 17th in the 1500M run with a time of 5:04.27. Finishing off the weekends activities for the women was the 4 x 400M Relay in which Avant, Brown, Miller and Esquivel all competed. The foursome posted a personal record time of 4:11.01 in the event, placing 17th.

    While the men didn’t have anyone move on they did have some strong representation at the prelims. Tyler Hopkins took 21st in the 200M Dash with a time of 22.35 seconds, and Kriesus Williams nabbed 24th in the 400M dash with a time of 50.59 seconds.

    Hopkins and Williams along with James Stewart and Joshua Tenerowicz teamed up to compete in the 4 x 100M and 4 x 400M relays events. The four athletes posted personal records in both races running the 100 in 44.12 seconds (22nd place) and the 400 in 3:26.90 (23rd place).

    Avant and Brown will move on to next weekend’s SoCal Finals hosted by Saddleback College. Events are scheduled to begin at noon on Saturday.
