Moorpark, CA (Track and Field) -- Freshman Maya Avant had a strong showing at the WSC South Meet hosted Moorpark College on Friday afternoon. Avant posted a 1st in 4th place showing in two field events, and was the highlight of the Citrus athletes on Friday.
Maya Avant’s two big finishes came in the Long and Triple Jump Events. Avant finished 4th in the Long Jump with a distance of 5.02 Meters, and 1st in the Triple Jump with a distance of 11.69 Meters. Avant was joined by Cassandra Zolozabal who had two good showings in the Hammer and Discus throws. Zolozabal took 5th in the Hammer (76 feet 8.5 inches) and 3rd in the Discus (83 feet 7 inches).
Joining Zolozabal and Avant in the winner’s circle was a pair of javelin throwers. Brooke Brown nabbed 3rd (26.92M) and Laura Hurtado (25.43M) took 6th in the Javelin competition on Wednesday. Despite the strong showing from those athletes, the women finished in 6th place out of the 6 competing teams scoring 30 points.
The men fared about the same finishing in sixth place with 29 points. The Citrus men had a good showing the 400 Meter Dash (Kriesus Williams 2nd and Adrian Rodriguez 4th), Javelin (Joshua Tenerowicz 4th), 200 Meter Dash (Tyler Hopkins 6th) and in a pair of relays where they finished third (4 x 100 and 4 x 400).
Citrus will be back out on the track this weekend as they participate in the Santa Barbara Relays on Friday afternoon. The first event is set for a 10:00 AM start.
