Bakersfield, CA (Men’s Golf) -- The Citrus College Men’s Golf team opened up their 2012 campaign on Monday and Tuesday of this week at the 2012 Larry Carr Invitational hosted by Bakersfield College. The Owls finished in a strong sixth place out of the nine competing teams, finishing just three strokes out of a top three finish.
Citrus opened up the two day tournament with a combined 381 at Seven Oaks Country Club. Sophomore Ryan Belliston dusted off his clubs after a year’s absence and came in as the team leader with an even par 72. His round of 72 was also the second best round of any golfer on day one. Sophomore Shane Favinger finished a stroke back of Belliston with a 73, while sophomore’s Etsuyuki Fukaya and Darren Foster each shot a round of 78.
The second day the Owls hit up Rio Bravo Country Club where they shot a team score of 404. Favinger picked up where he left off on Monday with a three over par 75, while Fukaya shot a round of 79. The duo was the only two Owls to score under 80. Belliston and freshman Daniel Olivas both shot 81’s to round out the top scores.
Over the two days, Citrus posted a team score of 785, just three shots off third place Bakersfield’s 782. Favinger would post a two day total of 148, the second best individual finish in the tournament. Belliston was the only other individual to finish in the individual top 20 with a combined 153, good enough for 11th place overall.
With their first rounds behind them the Owls turn their attention to their first Western State Conference event of the season next Monday. Citrus will take on the rest of the WSC in the College of the Canyons hosted event at Valencia Country Club. Tee-time is set for 12:30 PM.
